If you have a granite countertop, you know how beautiful it is. What you may not know is that you need to seal it periodically to keep it looking as great as it did when you first got it. Don’t worry though, because sealing your countertop is a simple and affordable step that will ensure your granite countertops last you for years to come.

If you want to test to see if your countertop needs to be sealed, apply water to the countertop and wait 15 minutes. If the water has seeped into the countertop, it needs to be sealed.

According to Bobvila.com, finding the right sealant is the first, and possibly the most important, step. Look for a sealant that contains the active ingredient fluorocarbon aliphatic resin. This ingredient is key to providing your granite countertops with years of protection.

Once you’ve found the right sealant, the next step is to thoroughly clean your countertops. Do this 24 hours before you actually seal them. Using a microfiber towel and a cleaning mixture of dishwashing detergent and isopropyl alcohol, clean and polish your countertops in a circular motion.

When it’s time to seal your countertops, open doors and windows for ventilation and wear a pair of gloves. First, test a small area to make sure that the sealant doesn’t stain your countertops. Next, apply the sealant in a circular motion. Wait the appropriate amount of time (as specified on the bottle’s label) before wiping up any excess sealant. Avoid getting your countertop wet for 48 hours after it is sealed.
